Gas hot water heaters ignite a flame for a heat source. The flame heats the bottom floor of the water heater. Electric hot water heaters use an element, which is basically a resistance coil that inserts into the bottom part of the boiler. It heats red hot. Now, both gas and electric boilers have a thermostat that turns the heat source on when the water cools. Theoretically this will always keep your hot water at a desired "hot" temperature. BUT HERE'S THE PROBLEM!
Those mineral deposits accumulate, encrust and pollute inside the water heater. Magnesium, calcium, copper, and dozens of metals and minerals gradually accumulate through natural chemical reactions in the heated water. Like a cancer they grow inside, building up honeycombs of solid matter and thick sludge deposits. They coat everything, including the heating element (Forcing it to work harder, and eventually burn out). Mineral debris chips off in small pieces that wash into your bath tub and powder room water, and into your kitchen. You may be drinking it.
