Whether you have gas or electric heaters, the affect of mineralization is the same. As an example, you Can See from this picture what happens to an Element in an electric Hot Water heater
Now Look closely inside the hole where the element came from. It's filled with magnesium and other minerals! It should have been a void.
In fact, this element was completely encased. When it was pulled out it left a tunnel inside the water heater. In other words, the entire bottom half of the hot water heater no longer had any water to speak of...it was all mineral deposit.
